To become an auto body repair professional and meet the demands of ever-advancing automotive technology, students must apply to auto body schools or trade schools. Those who desire a career in auto body repair, and have attained necessary skills at an auto body repair school, will gain more hands-on training once they have entered the field.

Auto body schools instruct students how to restore vehicles to their original state. Students will learn to follow and use directions and diagrams to accurately measure and position parts with respect to other components. They also learn to remove damaged parts and reinstall refurbished parts, and install and repair glass (windshields, window glass, etc.). They will learn to file, sand, straighten, realign and paint parts, fix dents, and many other skills essential to automotive restoration.

Students who have completed their coursework are eligible for taking certification tests administered by the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Professional certification enhances training and professional credentials. After passing all tests and acquiring ASE Master Collision Repair and Refinish Technician certification, individuals must take exams every five years to retain certification. For the practicing auto repair professional, supplemental and continuing education courses are offered to perfect skills and training so vital to keeping current in the industry.

Students who have completed the educational program in auto body schools can go on to work in automotive repair and maintenance shops or with automobile dealerships. Many will choose to specialize in on particular area, such as automotive and diesel repair. Earnings range from approximately $11 - $20 an hour, depending on education and experience, and may be higher for auto body technicians who practice multiple specialty repairs.
